CIRCULAR ECONOMY

The electric furnace steel production process gives new life to millions of tons of steel that would otherwise end up in landfills. Selected scrap metal enters ORI Martin every day, going on to become coils, bars, gears, bolts, springs and many other elements. Today, more than ever, in addition to being a duty, recycling is an opportunity to create a world with a lower environmental impact.

The electric cycle, compared with that of the blast furnace, reduces the use of natural resources of mineral origin by 90% and allows the reduction of CO2 emissions by 80%, including through the use of renewable energy.

iRECOVERY

For several years ORI Martin has been committed to innovation and energy. The iRecovery plant, launched in 2016 and costing about 12 million euros, allows us to recover heat and thus achieve a new level of energy efficiency in steel production.
The heat of the exhaust gases emerging from the steel plant is recovered for the production of steam which is then reused. In the summer this is used to power an ORC turbine to produce electricity that is equivalent to the consumption of 700 families, whereas in the winter it is sold to the city district heating network for the equivalent of the consumption of about 2,000 families, allowing a saving of about 10,000 tons of CO2 emissions, resulting in greater integration between the city and industry. This is our idea of a smart city.

iRECOVERY

RENEWABLE ENERGIES

ORI Martin supports the development of renewable energy in Italy. Through the signing of a long-term purchase agreement (PPA) with DXT Commodity and KGAL Investment Management, starting from the end of 2020, approximately 10% of the electricity needed by ORI Martin will be provided by a plant reliant upon renewable sources. ORI Martin's commitment will make it possible to build a 53 MW photovoltaic park in grid parity, i.e. without any incentive that imposes costs on the citizenry. The plant will allow a significant reduction in CO2 emissions into the atmosphere, equal to the effect that would be obtained by planting a forest of about 50,000 trees.

In 2018, approximately 1 MW of solar panels for the production of electricity were installed in the production sites of San Pietro Mosezzo (NO) and Cologne (BS), which will save 8,800 tons of CO2 emissions over the coming 20 years.

Inspired by the principles of ISO 14064-1:2018 standards and through third-party certification, every year the company reports greenhouse gas emissions expressed in CO2 equivalents, classified by product type.

OXYGEN PIPELINE

In 2018 Air Liquide installed a new 5 km long oxygen pipeline that allows the direct supply of oxygen to the ORI Martin site, replacing the use of tankers for the supply of liquid gas.
This solution avoids:
-    1250 journeys / year of articulated lorries
-    160 Kg / year of particulate emissions from road transport
-    2,100 kg / year of nitrogen oxides from road transport
-    270 tonnes / year of CO2 from road transport
-    4,000 tonnes / year of CO2 due to the lack of necessity for liquefaction.
In addition to all this, reforestation was carried out along the route in question.

ABATEMENT OF EMISSIONS INTO THE ATMOSPHERE

For many years, within a programme coordinated by the Ramet consortium (www.consorzioramet.it), ORI Martin has been involved in the reduction of atmospheric emissions. With major recent investments in the steel mill's smoke system and with the addition of an active carbon injection system, ORI Martin is able to guarantee emissions that are on average 90% lower than the current limit.

Through continuous investments in water recycling, in 20 years, the consumption of water per tonne of steel produced has been reduced by 70%.

In recent years, following the installation of multilayer sound-absorbing barriers and the use of Consteel technology, we have significantly reduced the plant's acoustic impact.

GREEN BELT

Over the years, more than 80,000 m² (20 acres) of land owned by ORI Martin, located around the plant has been destined to green areas, planted with hundreds of trees and open to the public. This has created a sort of "green belt" of mitigation between the plant and the surrounding neighbourhoods.

SUSTAINABLE MOBILITY

To facilitate increasingly eco-sustainable mobility, ORI Martin has financed the construction of cycle paths and a bike sharing station near the plant. This, in addition to a charging station for electric cars inside the plant, this also allows employees to reach the workplace with modern sustainable mobility solutions.

Several research projects are underway to develop new systems, new applications and new patents for the recovery of steel mill slag and waste products.

RAMET consortium

ORI Martin has participated in the RAMET Consortium (www.consorzioramet.it) since its foundation. This brings together 21 metallurgical companies from Brescia in a common project for the study and monitoring of the environmental impact of the production activities both on the workplace and the vicinity. The consortium's activity is carried out through the implementation of modeling studies relating to the presence of pollutants in the air, environmental chemical analyses and studies on micropollutants, as well as research on the treatment, disposal and reuse of waste.

ESTEP

The acronym of "European Steel Technology Platform", a non-profit organization in which ORI Martin has participated, together with other electricity cycle producers, since 2020 in the "Clean Steel" project with the aim of defining the guidelines for the production of clean steel from electric furnaces at a European level.
